What happens the morning after money becomes meaningless? Do we all go back to our jobs the week after the aliens land?

The past constantly tricks us into thinking in the wrong terms. For instance: how huge does a systemic shock have to be to actually puncture the consensus reality trance? Answer: we'll find out. Again and again. The question of how humanity would proceed after our first open contact with extra-terrestrial intelligence is fascinating. Even more interesting is how we would handle the second round of contact...you know, when the other aliens show up.

What kind of social effects would widespread telepathy have on human culture? So much of our everyday interaction is based on deception that access to functional psychic abilities would be problematic. At least. Would you even want unfiltered, direct access to the thoughts of people around you? Is that a superpower or a catastrophic mental illness?

Supposing it was possible to unfold almost limitless energy from the quantum vacuum level -- would this be a Good Thing for the human species and their Earth? What would we really do with infinite power? Would being given a billion dollars really change your life and solve your problems? Everywhere you go, there you are. People can successfully break out of prison, but not the psychology that got them there. Behold, The Secret Name: Khazzoom-Brookes.

Our future will be shaped by what we cannot change -- most of all, ourselves. Technocracy porn aside, there is no escaping what English-speaking despair artists often call The Human Condition. Here we tread the line between cheerful fatalism and an honest assessment of our basic limitations. Really: are human beings ready for the super-powerful technology of tomorrow? It's not like we handled hydrogen bombs very well.

Or LSD, for that matter.

What if the headlines tomorrow were about a group of top scientists holding a press conference to shamefully admit that cold fusion was real? What if you could get a toaster-sized appliance for a couple hundred bucks that put out continuous electrical current -- and never stopped? How can we break habits that are over 10,000 years old? Can we fix our own heads? How can we scale up Dunbar's Number using nothing but factory parts and aftermarket drugs? Is there an epigenetic switch available to tune out the circular drone of my confirmation biases? The writing of Jeff Wells is a foundational text for the Algorhythms project, especially If You Go Out In the Woods... -- a recounting of Carl Higdon's singular encounter, which was the inspiration for the s. maharba cover art. October 25, 1974. However, his website Rigorous Intuition is a goldmine of brainfood and Dr. Quandary suggested a guided tour. This is that:

Spirit of the Beehive -- assessing the common "boundary experiences" between abduction phenomena, religious visions, near death experiences, and of course, smokable DMT. Considering this as a unified field helps keep the mind limber...there are no easy answers here. Yet.

Who's Screening Who? and Far Away So Close both address the abiding questions that surround non-human intelligence: contact, targeting, time distortion...and most of all the sheer absurdity of the whole experience.

Seeing Things, Saying Things -- an examination of how our brains paralyze us in the face of extraordinary and paranormal events. It's an important introduction to Full Spectrum Dominance (and Part Two) which examines the ongoing war for consciousness control.

It's easy to intellectualize alternate dimensions, especially since we barely understand this one. Actually witnessing them firsthand strips Language away completely. Since we've started the Love Supreme tour, Team Ganesh has been on a strange path. I'm feeling pretty bilocational these days, and Dr. Quandary has been off on a Heroes Journey story arc that would make Stan Lee and David Lynch proud. For the Algorhythms project, though, High Strangeness and uncomfortably paranormal shit is basically oxygen.

The message beneath all synchronicity has a single common current and it goes like this:

How can we amplify that message? How can we puncture reality on a repeatable basis? How can we counteract a social environment that's boring and give total strangers permission to be awesome? Can we push the envelope without coming off as pushy?

Work with me here: What is the most beautiful thing you can show the world, and what steps can you be taking today to make that happen?

If violent, self-destructive behavior is shaped by environmental design, where are the most important "pressure points" for making highly effective changes? Can better live music lead to breakthrough catharsis and better life decisions, or is it just better live music? Is it actually possible to feed steak to a baby, given the right preparation? What if The Exorcist is actually about an extraterrestrial entity that toys with the primate mind of a human priest? What does it even mean to move sideways through time?

...and exactly how long has this monkey business been going on?

Through the light. "Selfishness is unnecessary and hence-forth unrationalizable...war is obsolete." Bucky challenged us to challenge ourselves. The Universe makes universal solutions impossible by nature. How can we make that an advantage? Or at least, less of a constant liability?

Geometry changes at different levels of scale, but as humans our morality stays centered at the organism level no matter how much we dilate our perception. It doesn't matter how you "look at it" -- dying sucks. You can picture yourself as a tiny cell in a massive superorganism, but you seldom get to experience it. And what can really be said of it when we do? So many mystics just wind up sounding like monsters when they speak from a Big Picture point of view.

Leviathan is a monster, of course. Most political science frames the human superorganism in negative terms, but why? Aren't happy organisms also healthy organisms with fully functional immune systems and thriving cells? Equating warfare, starvation, and genocide to natural process like digestion or apoptosis legitimizes a process that's more like injury or disease. Then again, 50 billion cells are going to die inside you today...

"Time Cloaking" sounds futuristic as all heck, but it turns out to be a rather simple trick. Thanks to the properties of spacetime and the unity of the electromagnetic spectrum, Time Cloaking turns out to be more optics than temporal translocation...see if you can grok this:

"Time cloaking is possible because of a kind of duality between space and time in electromagnetic theory. In particular, the diffraction of a beam of light in space is mathematically equivalent to the temporal propagation of light through a dispersive medium. In other words, diffraction and dispersion are symmetric in spacetime."

The actual size of the effect in question is somewhat less impressive than the headlines imply:

"The device has some limitations. The Cornell time cloak lasts only for 110 nanoseconds--that's not long. And Fridman and co say the best it can achieve will be 120 microseconds."

Shit, Paul Laffoley has a machine designed that can do better than that already. Are you up on the GEOCHRONMECHANE? Get hip.

Still: time cloaking is of deep interest to Team Ganesh. Tiny effects are all human engineers have ever needed to enact miracles on Earth. Soon these humble results will be better understood, and amplified into an actual means of local spacetime distortion. What can Time Cloaking do for you?

Meanwhile, in bunkers of Kent State, advances in magnetechnology prove even more interesting -- at least in terms of time travel potential. Behold the latest monster from the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory...

"High-powered research magnets are created by packing together dense, high-performance copper alloys and running an electrical current through them. All of the magnet's forces are focused on the center of the magnet coil — right where Toth and his team engineered the four ports. Building a magnet system with ports strong enough to withstand such strong magnetic fields and such a heavy power load was once considered impossible.

To accomplish the impossible, Toth's team cut large holes in the mid-plane of the magnet to provide user access to the bore but maintain a high magnetic field. All of this had to be done while supporting 500 tons of pressure pulling the two halves of the magnet together and, at the same time, allowing 160,000 amps of electrical current and 3,500 gallons of water per minute to flow through the mid-plane. (The water is needed to keep the magnet from overheating.)"

Serious experiments come with serious consequences, and tinkering with dimensionality itself is sure to create some completely fascinating problems. How would you deal with the literal disappearance of Lab 7B? Some of the strongest predictive programming in Fringe centers around the question of dealing with experiments that threaten the structural integrity of spacetime itself.

Science is fascinating stuff when it challenges our conceptions of reality, but what happens when it actually compromises reality in ways we cannot understand?

We look forward to finding out, of course. Algorhythms is not about Fear The Future dystopia, no matter how bleak our speculations may appear to be. Still, we wonder: is DHS allocating resources to keeping up with science's ongoing War on Reality? It all began, of course, on that infamous day in 2001...when a team at Harvard froze a beam of light in a laboratory setting. Since then, it's been an escalating series of brazen attacks, culminating in the human-jellyfish living laser project. (No, really.)

Considering the most recent round of fake terror threats involved bombs being actually implanted into human bodies, it's safe to say DHS is operating at least three years behind Hollywood, which is operating at least a decade behind science fiction at all times. Altogether, that's at least 13 Year Gap and it's a serious national security problem for the United States.

Consider The Crazies, a socio-economic horror film with a hilarious twist. The first 80% of the movie fakes the viewer out with a typical "zombie survival" action template, then abruptly makes it clear that the US Military, acting under protocols laid out by the Federal Government, is going to kill everybody and thus, far more dangerous than zombies who only go hunting one meal at a time. (Think about it.)

Once the true monster is revealed, it is far too late for the protagonists to fight back. They can only run, and in doing so, condemn another city full of innocent civilians to death. Roll credits. Containment is a nightmare that never ends, even nuclear weapons are not enough to enforce Control.

Consider "containment" as a concept itself -- this is an extension of the Myth of Entropy, a fictional end state known as a closed system. The damage that we do on this planet radiates out in waves just like any other spacetime phenomena does. Category errors make up most of the cultural discourse here in the Kali Yuga, as cognitive bias works with information technology to create an accelerating feedback loop of pure white noise. In other words, everything you think is horrible about the world in 2011 will be exponentially worse in less than one year.

The same is true for Beauty and Truth, though. It's all getting cranked up to 11 from here on out. Buckle up and eat good food.

January 23rd and Louis Mackey

It was January 23rd, 2001 when Waking Life came out and appropriately enough, there were actually two Louis Mackeys at the premiere event. One of them was the philosophy professor featured in the film, and the other would evolve into a rapper with the same name 5 years later. Since Funky Motherfucker Yeah, the non-tenured Louis Mackey has been carrying a couple dozen torches too obscurely academic to explain here.

In 2011, Louis Mackey's fascination with Latin literature manifested into The Dioscuri, which is boom bap psychedelic rap that takes hours to unpack and decode. Like his namesake, Mackey firmly believes in the power of these ancient archetypes to find meaning in our lives today.

AH: The Dioscuri sounds like a broadcast from another planet. What was your muse for the sound of this album?

Dr. Quandary: We drew a lot of our inspiration from bands like and Arzachel, Ramases and the 13th Floor Elevators, and in the end the goal was to recreate the vibe of those old records under the guise of a hip hop album. Since almost all of the songs were built on a solid chassis of psych rock tracks, we made a collective decision to emulate that in the mix. As a result you’ll hear a lot of dirty reverb and delay, which were hallmarks of the genre at the time. Pairing just the right balance of those effects with modern compression techniques yielded pretty powerful results.

Louis Mackey: Lyrically I drew a lot from Emerson, Virgil, the French Revolution, Catallus Gaius, Hercules with Steve Reeves, Tacitus, Archimedes, Henry David Thoreau, Waking Life, suicidal depression, my ex girlfriend, delusional puffery and Whiskey.

There are no coincidences in the Kali Yuga. Every rapper in the known Universe released something on 1/11/11 because who could pass up a visual hook like that? Out past the horizons of hip hop, NASA dropped a new release for the 11th, too: the third epic version of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Behold, the known Universe:

The cracks in our perception are being mapped out and given names...cognitive bias and The Decline Effect, "Mirror" Neurons and most bizarrely of all, the omnipresent hum of Pink noise. Mystics are generally very down on our delusions, and scientists often lament our limitations, but perhaps these are all features and not bugs. Perhaps you're flawed just right.

The next auspicious date is January 23rd, and Brother Jacques Vallee has lined up something quite tasty for those with eyes to see. At the Global Competitiveness Forum, an organization every bit as Darwinian as they sound, Vallee is leading a strange panel on a worthy subject: Learning from Outer Space. Here's the summary from the GCF site...

Who is running this Panel? Quite a cast: Vallee, Michio Kaku, Nick Pope, and Stan Friedman. (For the record, Algorhythms has no love for Friedman.) The venue is Riyadh, which sounds like the home of Cthulu but is actually the biggest city in Saudi Arabia - admission is $5000.

Intelligent Design fanboys like to throw the word "perfection" around. Perfection is what happens when you're not looking closely enough: it's a perceptual mistake on the operator's end of the equation. This is significant because it's a physical, decriptive mechanism for the esoteric teachings of Gurdjieff.

Q: Is the Earth's rotation slowing down?
A: Yes it is, due to a transfer of Earth's rotational momentum to the Moon's orbital momentum as tidal friction slows the Earth's rotation. Super-Earth? I realize that Grant Morrison writes his own reality, but does he get to write the headlines in ours now, too? As it turns out, the 'Super-Earth' is just a vaguely earth-like planet around a very sun-like star. It's not really news, just a sensationalized update to the Kepler Mission, a quest to map other solar systems in the nearby galaxy...a mission that leads to a troubling question.

What happens when we find them? There is no "If" involved here. Human beings are facing population explosion and resource depletion here on Earth and those trends show no signs of reversing for the foreseeable future. In order to continue civilization, we are basically forced into the void in these next few generations.

I would like to suggest that the Invisible College consider the adoption of a "Containment Imperative" -- to suggest that mankind must be prevented from spreading to other solar systems prior to higher evolution. It's not just that "They" aren't ready, it's that none of us are. Individually, humans produce poets, police and professors...but collectively, we function like a cross like between cancer and termites.

John Ball: "Mankind should be able to take over our galaxy in a fairly short time -- say a few hundred-thousand years -- unless somebody else already has. But I think that there are many other civilizations, much older than ours, who might have taken over the galaxy eons ago. Where are they? Where is everybody?"

The Containment Imperative and "The Zoo Hypothesis"

"The apparent size and age of the universe suggest that many echnologically advanced extraterrestrial civilizations ought to exist. However, this hypothesis seems inconsistent with the lack of observational evidence to support it."

The Fermi Paradox is based on a willful and total exclusion of the facts. As long as you're down for ignoring centuries of history and thousands of reported sightings and encounters just in the past 50 years, then yes, there's a "lack of observational evidence" after you've discarded all the...you know, observational evidence.

One response to the Fermi Paradox is the Zoo Hypothesis, variously attributed to Charles Fort, John Ball and John Keel. The argument is simple and compelling: ET civilization has already concluded that humans need to be contained on Earth. It is kind of a slam-dunk tautology: any super-advanced space-faring civilization would view us as violent and superstitious monkeys, largely driven by the fact humanity are violent and superstitious monkeys.

Obscurantist: "As John Ball himself says, the zoo hypothesis is pessimistic and psychologically unpleasant. It would be more pleasant to believe that extraterrestrials want to talk with us if they knew we were here. However, as Ball concludes, the history of science is full of examples of of psychologically unpleasant hypotheses that have turned out to be true."

John Ball: "The history of science contains, one after another, a series of blows to mankind's anthropocentric ego. Egypt does not seem to be the center of the universe, nor Earth, nor our Sun, nor our galaxy. We humans seem to be only intelligent apes. John Keel: "I abandoned the extraterrestrial hypothesis in 1967 when my own field investigations disclosed an astonishing overlap between psychic phenomena and UFOs. The objects and apparitions do not necessarily originate on another planet and may not even exist as permanent constructions of matter. It is more likely that we see what we want to see and interpret such visions according to our contemporary beliefs."

You've said that UFOs represent a form of alien intelligence that is actively manipulating human society. How and toward what end?

Jacques Vallee: A new computer analysis of historical trends, compiled in the 1970s, led me to plot a striking graph of "waves" of UFO activity that was anything but periodic. Fred Beckman and Dr. Price Williams of UCLA pointed out that it resembled a schedule of reinforcement typical of a learning or training process: the phenomenon was more akin to a control system than to an exploratory task force of alien travelers. There are many control systems around us, and some are a part of nature: ecology, climate, etc. Some are man-made: the process of education, the thermostat in your home. If the UFO phenomenon represents a control system, can we test it to determine if it is natural or artificial, open or closed? This is one of the interesting questions about the phenomenon that has never been answered.

What about the French theory that UMMO was a psychological experiment?

Jacques Vallee: Yeah, they thought that the cult had been used or was manipulated by the KGB. Because for one thing, some of their ideas--some of the data that was supposedly channeled from the UMMO organization in the sky was very advanced cosmology. Very advanced cosmology about twin universes involving some data that was not stupid--it came straight out of the notes of Andre Sakarav, including some of the unpublished notes of Sakarav, some things that Sakarav was known to have worked on, but had not published. And so some people--and I don't know who's right--felt that somebody had to have access to those notes, to inspire those messages, perhaps the KGB. It wasn't just ordinary science fiction; it was somebody who knew what some of the more advanced cosmologists were thinking.

Why would the KGB or any intelligence agency perpetrate such an arcane hoax?

Jacques Vallee: Well, let me tell you a little story. About fifteen years ago there was a group that suddenly appeared in San Francisco. They had a big party downtown. And they invited everybody who was anybody in parapsychology. And they made a little speech saying, "We have all this money from somebody who wants to do good and help research, we know that there isn't much money in parapsychology; we will entertain proposals for research, give us your best ideas; we will send it to a panel who will review it and we will fund the best research." After the party, a lot of people rushed home to their computers and typed in all their best ideas, sent it on--but the organization never existed, was never heard from again. Somebody was fishing.

Earth’s oceans may appear limitless from a human perspective, but look closer and you get a different picture. They aren’t vast, structureless seas of liquid stretching uniformly to the horizon. To most of their inhabitants, in fact, they are not liquid at all. The oceans turn out to be—well, jelly.

Not very thick jelly, it’s true. Certainly not thick enough to notice when you swim in it. But for the marine world’s smallest creatures—the tiny plankton and microbes that make up the bulk of its inhabitants—seawater is not a uniform fluid, but a tangle of intertwined chains of sugar molecules that trap water within their meshwork to form a gel.

The long strands in the oceanic gel are mostly crosslinked polysaccharides. If the polysaccharides in 1 milliliter of seawater could be placed end-to-end, they would stretch out to 5,600 kilometers! Coexisting proteins would span 310 kilometers ; DNA, 2 kilometers. This same milliliter may also contain up to a million bacteria and ten times as many virus particles. Also in this brew are, on the average, 1.000 protozoans and 100 phytoplankton. It’s a microscopic metropolis, about the size of a sugar cube, and one in which you may never wish to swim again!

As physicist Richard Feynman observed in his seminal essay, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” there is nothing in the laws of physics which prevents building armies of molecular-sized machines. At present, scientists have already built atomic-sized curiosities, such as an atomic abacus with Buckyballs and an atomic guitar with strings about 100 atoms across.

Paul Davies speculates that a space-faring civilization could use nanotechnology to build miniature probes to explore the galaxy, perhaps no bigger than your palm. Davies says, “The tiny probes I’m talking about will be so inconspicuous that it’s no surprise that we haven’t come across one. It’s not the sort of thing that you’re going to trip over in your back yard. So if that is the way technology develops, namely, smaller, faster, cheaper and if other civilizations have gone this route, then we could be surrounded by surveillance devices.”

VALLEE: Now, if you go to the movies while the movie is playing, it’s suddenly different because now it is a sensory experience—you see it; you react! It speeds up your heart, and does all kinds of physiological things to you. But does it mean that Bambi exists?

Of course not. There is a basic flaw in that level of analysis, and I think that’s a pitfall in which the whole of UFOlogy, especially American UFOlogy, has fallen. There is only a first-level reading.

Instead of looking at the screen, what I want to do is to turn around and look the other way. When we look the other way what we see is a little hole at the top of the wall with some light coming out. That’s where I want to go. I want to steal the key to the projectionist’s booth, and then, when everybody has gone home, I want to break in. And what you find there is a meta-system.

It’s a system of wheels that can generate anything you want—Bambi, Rambo, “Close Encounters"… That’s my next project; I would like to play with the projector. One way to do that would be to interfere with the phenomenon itself. I think if you did that you would force it to react...If it’s a control system, then there is a feedback loop somewhere. Once you find the feedback loop then you can screw around with it.

VALLEE: There are two kinds of control systems. There are control systems that are open, like a university, where you take tests for what seems to be a long time, but eventually you graduate, and go out into the real world a little bit better equipped to deal with it.

Then there are closed systems like jails. If I was going to build a control system, it would be an open control system because I don’t think I would derive much pleasure out of running a jail. If I assume the UFO phenomena represents some kind of consciousness out there, then I would also assume it would be dealing in terms of an open system. That assumption may be wrong. Maybe this a jail, and there is no hope. But I’m going with the assumption that if we respond to these tests, we will learn something. There is a feeling that I get in the course of my investigations of being in the presence of a form of consciousness that is truly remarkable.

That consciousness has a great sense of absurdity, and also a great sense of humor. The bottom line is that I feel that I’ve learned something out of this whole exercise, and as long as I’m continuing to learn something I’m going to continue to do it.

Akshara is the basis of creation. It's not the letters, it's the syllables. That might sound simple and shallow, but it also implies that your lyrics have a visceral effect beneath their semantic meaning. We creative types like to think we're quite clever, but we barely know what we're really broadcasting.

Rapping has made this phenomenon a lot more obvious in the past few decades, making it clear that Wordsound Have Power is just as true when the actual content is meaningless bullshit. Anyone with a compelling flow and a great voice can grab the listener. That's a beautiful thing -- and it's also a big problem.

There is a whole separate language of sound and form, one we're only beginning to understand as human beings here on Earth. We use it instinctively -- although musical talent may not be common, musical hearing is a fairly universal human trait. When the bass player hits a dead note, the whole room can can hear it...and feel it.

Synesthesia, like most technological advances and adaptive mutations, is a blessing and a curse. (Or at least, a cure and a disease.) Our five senses make it easy to forget the fundamental unity of the electromagnetic spectrum, the continuous flow that our limited perceptual hardware only shows us a tiny fraction of. We interact with it, though, and the Chaos is most definitely interacting with us, too...although on most days, it feels like "Fucking With Us" might be the more accurate description.

We live, breathe, play, work, sleep, speak and sing in a liquid medium. Common sense lies to us about most things, right? We think space is empty, we think oceans are water (nope, much more interesting), we think Out is up and In is down because we think our spherical floor is actually a flat surface. Space and zero-gravity evolution will demand a New Language, a more accurate orientation for homo sapiens caeli to make their way through this Universe like the New Gods we've always been.

A Cymatic Vocabulary

It doesn't get discussed much, but hip hop completely destroyed Western tonality without anybody noticing. Most critics never looked past the funk and soul samples, but the Bomb Squad knew exactly what they were doing. Hip hop production is micro-tonal and xenharmonic...and it doesn't care about either of those concepts. Samples get time-stretched, forced out of key, and rebuilt into harmonies that have no place in chromatic scales, and no precedent in Dead White Music Theory. That's a good thing. If homo sapiens caeli is going to create a new language, it can only come from new music.

Cymatics is more than pretty pictures -- it's a working vocabulary for an actual physics of sound. Music Theory in it's current form is a tiny little sandbox, an embarrassment to the same subject it claims to study. The most notable exception being the recent work of Dmitri Tymoczko on a more geometric approach to analyzing tonality, chord changes and harmony.

What will Led Zeppelin sound like in outer space? Does music even exist in the vast inky void?

Weirdest Algorhythms EP Review of All Time Ever

I really can't tell if he liked the album or not, but it's safe to say we really got him thinking, at least. This is by Shintaro Miyazaki, a hip hop fan all the way from the Humboldt University in Berlin (Ja! Wirklich!) and here's what he had to say about the Algorhythms EP:

"Algorhythms is trying to understand enhanced media technologies from a sonic, sometimes even musical perspective, which means that I am interested in temporal structures of networks. Rhythms are full of little events. You can listen to the examples online. Details can be read in my draft version of a forthcoming article, "Hidden AlgoRHYTHMS Everywhere".

The notion of an algorhythm can also be connected to the Deleuzian concept of assemblages/ agencies. In their pragmatics Deleuze & Guattari propose a method, which starts with making copies, then drawing maps/ cartographies, think about the abstract machines and creating the diagrams and finally sketching and conceptualizing the programs of the assemblages, which make effects, movements and actions out of those assemblages.

I would place emphasis here on the programs, therefore on the algorithms and protocols, which control the rhythm of our network transmissions. Algorhythms act therefore as hidden control structures, in which power relations are implemented and which also act as power controlling or enabling mechanisms as all forms of media operations do.

The notion of algorhythm is able to show more precisely the media archeological hidden structures of networks than the term "protocol", because it points at materialistic, effective and affective temporal structures of micrological processes, which we cannot perceive.

Nevertheless it doesn't look deep enough into aspects of time, which I think become more and more important, when studying the epistemology of networks."

You first found Naturetone through a remix contest?

Thirtyseven: Definitely. We didn't know what to expect from our first remix contest, and in retrospect we did a criminally stupid job of running that whole contest. We really should have gotten some grown ups to help us. Instead, it was a hands-on learning experience and we got over 100 submissions, most of whom waited for about 6 months before they heard anything from us. That was 100% my fuck-up.

The highlight of the contest was Naturetone. His first submission was amazing. Then his second, third and fourth submissions came in, and we realized we'd discovered a monster...or rather, he'd discovered us.

How did he become part of the World Around collective?

Thirtyseven: We asked as soon as we possibly could without looking like desperate amateurs. I think we waited a month, tops, before suggesting it. Dr. Quandary had already heard some of the sketches for Nihon, so we knew it would be a perfect fit. The final version of the album was even better than I expected and I've had it on repeat for like a month straight now.

What other Naturetone projects are in the works?

Thirtyseven: He's already dropped another one, actually. It's a short remix EP for Dres (of Black Sheep) and my favorite track is definitely this one, a space-funk epic version of Forever Luvlee...

Since the Algorhythms EP dropped last year, there's been a slow but steady demand for accapellas. Rather than just drop these quietly, we're going to run a whole summer-long remix contest and keep feeding you more.

THE RULES: Do whatever you want. When you're done, though, we do have a few regulations.

Submissions have to be rendered in at least 256 kbps mp3 format. We don't want any .wav files until we decide we like your track. All entries will be judged by a rotating panel of WAR artists, with me and Dr. Quandary making the final decisions.

Algorhythms, Rhizome, Deleuze, Guattari

Critical theory is a refuge for clever people who don't like dealing with reality or substance. The style and technique of actual visionaries like Marshall McLuhan or Manuel de Landa is, unfortunately, very easy to emulate for people without any actual vision. Of course, the genre of academic writing is no different from country music or hip hop, in that respect: it's all 99% crap in this modern age.

Critical theory is different, though: like most philosophy, it's much closer to 100% ambient crap saturation. So when critical theory gets used to promote talentless, funk-castrated "electronic music," we're at a whole new level of the game. Suddenly, this stuff is no longer pretentious or irritating: it gets funny as fuck.

Here's an article this kid wrote about himself. He thinks he's claiming the name "Algorhythms," but the sad fact is, he is an unpaid intern writing hilarious ad copy for me. Dylan, I like the direction you're taking this. You should broaden your references outside the safe white-boy territory of Friedrich and D&G, though -- I want more Vadana Shiva and Malcolm X from you in the future, man.

Algorithms are molecular blueprints of nature's randomness. Nietzsche was in awe of nature, he said that nature is no model, it exaggerates , it distorts , leaves gaps. Dylan's music makes inaudible sounds , understood with the help of Deleuze as 'TIME, DURATION and INTENSITY'. His instruments singularly don't make music, they hear the inaudible through their material interventions on the audible landscape.

Music is abstracted from the black hole. Cage believed that nothing is predetermined, and although Dylan uses diagrams of algorithms to conduct his compositions there is similarly nothing predetermined about them. Nature is chance.

I guess thats why Dylan's art-cum-music excites me so much. Dylan creates anti-rhythms, like a lost pioneer creating a new aural landscape , a new sub-terranean-culture ... 'AlgoRhythms'.

LMFAO!!! Solid gold.

Algorhythms is Beyond All Spheres of Force and Matter. Algorhythms was distilled, destroyed, destabilized. I wrote battle raps for years -- insecurity is the catalyst for many a career here in hip hop. Algorhythms was a process of going through almost 100 printed pages and throwing out probably 97 of them. That material grew into "What's This?" - parts of "Blowing Numbers" - and "Audrey Hepburn" of course. Everything else on the EP was written for the beats that Dr. Quandary gave me..."Graph Paper" was done the same day I got it, but it's also the shortest track on the EP.

Since then, all of the material has been more deliberate...slower writing, more consistent and conceptual. Ram Nam Satya Hai was how I started and finished every live show I did from 2007-2009. I like to keep the focus on any given conversation on MEMENTO MORI material. Especially in a bar setting!!

EELRIJUE is ferocious -- definitely destined to be the "Apocalypse Now" of our catalog. On that cymatic, simmering note...here's a classic from the archives:

McKENNA: Jacques Vallee, who is one of the foremost commentators on the phenomenon, has been at great pains to point out that with the flying saucer phenomenon we're dealing with thousands and thousands of incidents per year, throughout the world. Even at our own primitive level of scientific sophistication we can learn a great deal about a planet by sending a single probe to that planet. What kind of scientific program of investigation requires thousands and thousands of appearances? And if we make the assumption that not all appearances are observed, but that in fact only a small number are observed, then the number of appearances that must actually be going on soars toward an astronomical number. It suggests we're dealing with an interpenetration by an alien dimension on an almost industrial scale.

MISHLOVE: Of course a single probe could cause thousands of appearances.

McKENNA: If it were of a sophisticated enough nature, that's right. The approach that I have taken, that has characterized my work with this phenomenon, was first of all to say we have not carried out a sufficiently in-depth survey of the life already on this planet to be able to say that at some time in the past life did not arrive here and thrive here that is not part of the general heritage of life on this planet, but that has somehow come in from the outside. My candidate for that kind of an intrusive extraterrestrial would probably be a mushroom of some sort, or a spore-bearing life form, because spores are very impervious to low temperatures and high radiation -- the kind of environment met with in outer space.

MISHLOVE: In other words, a mushroom spore could conceivably even waft itself up through the atmosphere of our planet and enter into empty space.

McKENNA: Oh, there's no question but what this is happening -- that through what's called Brownian motion, which is sort of random percolation, spores do reach the outer edge of our atmosphere, and there, in the presence of cosmic rays and meteors and rare, highly energetic events, occasionally a very small percentage of these biological objects are wafted into space. We even possess meteorites that are believed to be pieces of the Martian surface, thrown out by impacts on the Martian surface of asteroidal material. In fact I think part of the grappling with the UFO mystery is going to lead to the conclusion that space is not an impermeable and insurmountable barrier to biology -- that in fact planets are islands, and life does occasionally wash in from distant places, and if conditions are correct, can take hold. However, let me say in the UFO phenomenon we are dealing, or we presuppose that we are dealing, not simply with the phenomenon of extraterrestrial biology, but with the phenomenon of extraterrestrial intelligence, and this is a hackle-raising notion.

The Geometry of Consonance

Abstract
In my talk, I will describe five properties that help make music sound tonal — or “good,” to most listeners. I will then show that combining these properties is mathematically non-trivial, with the consequence that space of possible tonal musics is severely constrained. This leads me to construct higher-dimensional geometrical representations of musical structure, in which it is clear how the various properties can be combined. Finally, I will show that Western music combines these five properties at two different temporal levels: the immediate level of the chord, and the long-term level of the scale. The resulting music is hierarchically self-similar, exploiting the same basic procedures on two different time scales. In fact, one and the same twisted cubic lattice describes the musical relationships among common chords and scales.
